This triple portrait was commissioned by Anne of her and her parents returning from mass on an Ash Wednesday, you can see the mark of the ashes on each of their forehaeads. This ceremony happens in the Roman Catholic Church at the beginning of Lent. In the background you can see a picture of Irish rebel leader Patrick Pearse.
